Japanese Psychedelic Rock

Japan has a very interesting psychedelic rock scene.

The first Japanese psychedelic rock artist I heard was Sundays & Cybele, formed in 2004. I love, love, love their sound; it's very beautiful, transcendental. My favorite song of theirs is Waiting For You, and my second favorite song of theirs is Tell Me The Name Of That Flower.

ゆらゆら帝国 (Yura Yura Teikoku) is a wonderful, noisy and surreal sounding psychedelic-garage rock band, formed in 1989. My favorite songs of theirs are できない, Wakatte Hoshii, and EVIL CAR. If you like the sound of any of those songs, any of their albums are definitely worth checking out.

Fishmans (フィッシュマンズ) may be the most recognizable band on this list. They made beautiful, beautiful layered and mellow psychedelic-esque dream pop. If this sounds interesting to you (and you have some time to spare), check out their album Long Season.

P-MODEL were an incredible, eclectic and unique new wave band, started in 1979 by Susumu Hirasawa, who also went on to do great solo work. My favorite album of theirs is In a Model Room, and my favorite songs of theirs are Another Day and Art Mania. If you enjoy new wave, absolutely check out P-MODEL.
